Unmasked: The Vaccine Safety-Signal Report the Networks Wouldn't Touch
A sitting Senate subcommittee chairman released an official report alleging FDA officials were shown a better way to catch vaccine safety signals — and told the scientist to "hold off." He says ten major outlets declined to publish or cover it. NU surfaces the report, the receipts, and the named blackout — with the one caveat that keeps it honest. Records over spin.
1. The story, and the silence
On April 29, 2026, Sen. Ron Johnson, chairman of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (PSI), released a Majority Staff report — "Unmasked: How Biden Health Officials Purposely Turned a Blind Eye Toward COVID-19 Vaccine Safety Signals" — with hundreds of pages of records, and held a hearing on it【1】【6】. This is a real, official Senate document, on his Senate website.
What makes it a NU story isn't just the content — it's that, by Johnson's own account, the press declined to carry it. In his op-ed he writes that The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA TODAY, and Fox Digital all declined or ignored his op-ed, and that NBC, ABC, PBS, CNN, and MSNBC refused to cover the report【7】. Those are specific, named outlets and a specific, checkable claim — not a vague "they buried it." That's the kind of receipt NU runs on.
2. What the report actually alleges
Per the PSI report and its released records【1】【3】【6】:
- In 2021, Dr. Ana Szarfman — a senior FDA medical officer and a developer of the agency's safety data-mining tools — flagged a "superior" data-mining method that corrected for "masking," a known limitation that can hide safety signals in the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS).
- Run with the better method between March and July 2021, the analyses surfaced "49 examples of extreme masking" and roughly 25 statistically significant safety signals not previously detected — the report lists items including sudden cardiac death, pulmonary infarction, cerebral artery occlusion, and Bell's palsy.
- Instead of acting on them, the report alleges FDA leadership pushed back. Dr. Peter Marks — director of the FDA's vaccine center (CBER) — warned that her data mining could "create erroneous conflicts that feed into anti-vaccination rhetoric," and officials directed Szarfman to "hold off" on producing and sending the reports【3】.
- Johnson's report frames it as officials choosing not to "err on the side of caution" — demanding definitive proof of causation they knew couldn't be met — out of concern for vaccine hesitancy and full licensure ahead of mandates.
A related thread the subcommittee has pressed: the NIH (Dr. Avindra Nath, NINDS) was studying and treating people with serious injection injuries in 2021, and participants were reportedly told "not to talk about the study," leaving treating physicians without guidance until the work surfaced later【7】.
3. The one caveat that keeps this honest — and it still lands
NU won't hand the other side a free dismissal, so read this part carefully:
- A "safety signal" is a statistical flag that warrants investigation — not proof of harm. And **VAERS is a passive system**: anyone can file a report, and a report shows a death or event followed vaccination, **not that the vaccine caused it. So when the cumulative VAERS tallies Johnson cites — on the order of ~39,000 deaths "associated with" the shots — get quoted, "associated" is doing heavy lifting. Those are reports, not confirmed causal deaths. Claims that specific children were "killed" by the shots are Johnson's characterization and are contested**, not adjudicated.
Here's why the report still matters even with that caveat: the allegation isn't "VAERS proves mass death." It's that officials were shown a tool that surfaced more signals, and chose to look away and tell the public they "weren't seeing safety signals." The whole point of signal detection is to investigate the needle, not to bury it because it's inconvenient. That allegation — documented in a Senate report, with internal quotes — does not depend on proving causation. It depends on whether they did the job of looking. The report says they were told to stop looking.
4. NU's bottom line
Two things are true, and NU shows both: the explosive causal claims about vaccine harm are not proven, and a United States Senator put out an official report — with internal documents and quotes — alleging health officials suppressed a better safety-signal method and misled the public, and says a wall of major outlets wouldn't touch it. The second is exactly the kind of primary record the broadcast networks left on the floor.
Read the PSI report, the released records, and the op-ed — all linked. Then judge whether "rare and mild" was the honest answer, and whether the silence was the news.
